ShopSavvy Incompatible with Unlocked Android Phones?

We all were pretty excited when we heard about “G1 Unlocking”. It feels nice to be free from carrier’s commitments and all such stuff. Doesn’t it? But is there any annoyance with Unlocked Android devices? Nothing was heard in this regard until recently when someone reported that popular Android app ShopSavvy doesn’t work with unlocked Android phones.
Mmmm… if its true, then its really bad. ShopSavvy is one of the most exciting apps of G1 (or Android phones) and its of utmost curse if you find that the cool, nice app is not working on your phone.

Reportedly, some owners of “unlocked G1’s” have told that ShopSavvy was no longer there when they unlocked their smartphones. ShopSavvy works in only some countries like UK, Germany, US, Poland, China, Japan, Holland, Czech Republic and Austria. When the ShopSavvy was contacted to explain the reported error, they told that it’s possible that may be users  are trying to use the app in the areas that are compatible with ShopSavvy but the distribution of ShopSavvy prevents it’s appearance in users’ devices. It means, if someone is using AT&T SIM instead of T-Mobile SIM in U.S, the app can’t locate that the phone is being used in U.S with a U.S carrier (AT&T in this case).

So if you want to use G1 free of bugs and errors, then use the “locked” T-Mobile phone. Don’t mess with it.

ShopSavvy will run fine on unlocked phones, the problem is that it won’t show up in the Android Marketplace if it can’t figure out where you are via the sim. We really should put up a binary version on a website somewhere.
